The Sacred Theory of the Earth by Thomas Burnet is a landmark work of late-seventeenth-century natural philosophy, in which Burnet advanced a bold attempt to reconcile biblical history—especially Creation, the Flood, and the world’s ultimate destruction—with a rational and systematic explanation of the Earth’s origin and structure. First published in English in 1684 and continued in 1690, the work proposes that the primeval Earth was originally smooth and perfectly ordered, its present mountains and seas having formed through catastrophic geological collapse. The theory was widely read and fiercely debated, and that controversy is preserved in this copy by the inclusion, bound at the rear, of A Review of the Sacred Theory of the Earth (1690), a contemporary critique that challenges Burnet’s speculative cosmology from a more rigorously mathematical and Newtonian perspective. Together, Burnet’s treatise and its near-simultaneous rebuttal form a self-contained record of one of the most significant early controversies in the history of geology and cosmology, capturing a pivotal moment in the transition from theological system-building to modern scientific thought.
