[Walch, Johann Georg] Bibliotheca Patristica Litterariis Adnotationibus Instructa Ienae [Jena, Germany]: Sumtu Viduae Croeckerianae 1770 First Edition Octavo, vi, 582, [26] pages, bound in quarter leather over marbled boards. Spine lettered in gilt. Text in Latin. Top board and front free endpapers detached with a piece of tape attempting to repair the book. Rear hinge cracked with board hanging on by a thread. Formerly in an institutional library with some of the typical markings. Some rubbing and wear, scuffs, some discoloration and foxing, else in good condition. Bibliotheca Patristica Litterariis Adnotationibus Instructa (Ienae, 1770) is a major eighteenth-century bibliographical survey of early Christian literature compiled by the Lutheran theologian Johann Georg Walch (1693–1775), professor at the University of Jena. Conceived as a comprehensive “library” of patristic writings, the work methodically catalogs the known editions, translations, and critical studies of the Church Fathers from the apostolic age through the early medieval period, accompanied by Walch’s scholarly annotations. Written in Latin and printed by Johann Michael Teubner, the Bibliotheca Patristica reflects the Enlightenment’s drive to organize and critically assess theological knowledge while preserving the authority of classical sources. Long valued by theologians and bibliographers, it remains an important landmark in the history of patristic scholarship and eighteenth-century German academic printing.
