First it was necessary to gain a foothold. Small switchers, that could handle specific assignments more economically than steam goats, were initially accepted. Traditional steam builder American Locomotive Company, in collaboration with electrical supplier General Electric and oil engine manufacturer Ingersoll-Rand, produced the first successful diesel-electric, CNJ 1000. Baldwin, like Alco, dabbled with internal combustion as an extension of its experience with straight electric locomotives, but although both fielded diesel demonstrators and built production models, each concentrated more on its bread and butter product, steam. They caught the imagination of the general public-and the attention of operating departments.
