Peasant Art in Italy Edited by Charles Holme London, Paris, New York: The Studio Ltd 1913 First Edition Quarto, finely bound in half leather over green cloth covered boards, signed by the binder "Bound by Oldach Co. / Philadelphia." Small raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Top edge gilt. Profusely illustrated throughout. Some slight rubbing and wear, spine slightly sunned, some occasional light scattered foxing, else in very good condition. Peasant Art in Italy, edited by Charles Holme and published in 1913, is an important early 20th-century study of Italian vernacular and folk design, documenting traditional textiles, ceramics, woodcarving, metalwork, and domestic decorative arts at a moment when such material was being newly appreciated by artists, designers, and scholars. Issued under the direction of Holme—best known for his work with The Studio—the volume reflects contemporary Arts and Crafts–era interest in regional craftsmanship and indigenous aesthetic traditions. This copy has been attractively rebound in signed half leather by Oldach & Co., an American fine-binding firm active in the early 1900s, adding both visual appeal and collectible significance.
