Description

This First Edition of Picasso 347 by Georges Bloch is a two-volume set of REPRODUCTIONS published by Random House / Maecenas Press in 1970, and printed by Conzett & Huber of Zurich, Switzerland. It features high fidelity REPRODUCTIONS of the 347 Series engravings created by Pablo Picasso at Mougins between March 16 and October 5, 1968. This two volume collection is considered a catalogue raisonné of Picasso’s printmaking during that period. The reproductions in Georges Bloch’s two-volume catalog were illustrated using high-quality photomechanical printing, most likely halftone offset lithography. This method was commonly used in fine art catalogs of the era to reproduce tonal variations from etchings and engravings with fidelity. The catalog includes 295 plates across the two volumes, and while they’re not hand-pulled prints, the reproductions are detailed enough to convey the texture and line work of the originals. The inner pages of both volumes are in Fine condition. The inside cover of Vol. II has a repair from a tear. The box shows signs of wear from use, commensurate with its age. See photos to view areas of taped repairs to the box. The cover of the box shows white markings. Each volume of the Georges Bloch Picasso 347 has the following dimensions: Length: 17.5 inches (44.45 cm) Width: 12.5 inches (31.75 cm) Thickness: 3.5 inches (8.89 cm) Weight: 10 lbs. each The original 347 Series on which the 2 volumes above are based, is a collection of 347 etchings created by Pablo Picasso between March 16 and October 8, 1968. It is one of his largest print series and was produced in collaboration with master printers Aldo and Piero Crommelynck, who set up an etching workshop near Picasso’s residence. The series explores a wide range of themes, including circus performers, musketeers, musicians, and erotic scenes, reflecting Picasso’s fascination with storytelling and observation rather than direct participation. The prints were first exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and Galerie Louise Leiris in Paris in 1970. Georges Bloch was a Swiss art collector, publisher, and scholar known for his extensive work in cataloging Pablo Picasso’s graphic works. He was born in 1900 and dedicated much of his career to documenting and preserving Picasso’s prints and engravings. Bloch’s project was driven by his deep admiration for Picasso’s printmaking and his commitment to creating a comprehensive catalogue raisonné of the artist’s works. Picasso 347 was published in 1970 and showcases etchings, drypoints, aquatints, and mezzotints, reflecting Picasso’s late-career experimentation with printmaking. Bloch’s work remains a definitive reference for collectors and scholars studying Picasso’s prints. His cataloging efforts helped preserve the integrity and historical significance of Picasso’s graphic works.
