She grew up in a poor but deeply religious Welsh-speaking family. From a young age, Mary had a deep desire to own a Bible of her own, but at the time, Bibles were rare and expensive, and they were not easily available in the Welsh language. Her Journey By the time she was about 15 years old, around 1799 or 1800, Mary had saved enough money — reportedly for six years — to buy a Bible. She had learned that a man named Rev. Thomas Charles in Bala, about 26 miles (42 km) from her home, might have a Welsh Bible for sale. So Mary set off barefoot on this long journey through the rugged Welsh countryside. When she arrived in Bala, she found that all the copies of the Welsh Bible had already been sold. The Outcome Rev. Thomas Charles was so moved by her dedication and disappointment that he either found or arranged for a Bible for her — though accounts vary on whether she received one immediately or had to wait. Her story deeply impacted him. The Legacy Mary’s story inspired Thomas Charles to advocate for the wider distribution of affordable Bibles in the Welsh language and beyond. He took her story to London, and it played a major role in the founding of the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1804, whose mission was to make the Bible available to people around the world in their own language. Today Mary Jones’s journey is remembered as a powerful example of faith and perseverance. There’s a museum in Bala called Mary Jones World, dedicated to her life and legacy. Her story is still told in Sunday schools and churches, particularly in Wales.
