Taking care of a family is one of the most demanding jobs ever, it can be time consuming and requires a lot of right decisions to keep the family running.  Most times parenting seems a difficult task especially for low income families. This is because there is a lot of things to do with just a little fund. Aside providing the basic necessities of life, parents are saddled with the responsibility of good moral and social upbringing of their children and this is where some additional expenses will be needed. The means to raise these funds for their family most times cause some emotional and psychological trauma for the low income (poor) parents.

Sadly, the family needs does not just go away because the parents are traumatised, it even gets worse if the parents should go into sadness. The right thing should be; setting your priorities right while working on how to create more funds for the family.

Setting priorities

For some people, setting priorities is where the actual parenting starts. Many parenting coach had said – “setting priorities is the real test of parenthood”. At this point, parents are confused on what should come first and which decision is the best for their families. This is also the point where children (especially teenagers) get out of control of their parents if their priorities are not set right.

This article will share some insight on how best to set your priority as a parent or parents and also walk you through it benefits. So here are some points:

“At the end of the day, you should try to remember that it’s not about the number of followers you have or the numbers of likes, comments, and shares your posts are getting.

It’s the number of people who will be present in the hospital room when you fall terribly sick.

It’s the number of people who will remember your birthday like they remember their first name.

It’s the number of people who will invite you to celebrate Christmas or New Year’s Eve.

It’s the number of people who will actually show up to look at your newborn child or to bless your newly bought house.

It’s the number of people who will actually cross an ocean to see your face.

It’s the number of people who will wipe your tears when one of your parents passes away.

It’s the number of people who will make a slightly larger than a thumb effort to be there for you.”

  1. Family first: I guess you are not surprised at this; of course it is family over all. But here is the truth; many parents think more of their jobs and carrier because this is how they provide their family needs but they tend to forget the importance of their presence in the family. As parents, your family needs you more than they need any other thing. Learn to spend some good time with your family, by so doing, the children are learning the importance of family and how to cherish it.
  2. Set standards: “a lawless state is bound to fall”. You should instil some “code of conduct” into your children. It should be known and when the situation occurs, – recited by your children that “in our house, we don’t do this, and we don’t do that”. There should be a clear understand on the moral life of your kids. Also, spear no time in giving them corrections when necessary.
  3. Work on yourself: you have to understand that you are your children’s role model. Whatever you do and say around your children has a way of registering in their subconscious mind and eventually comes to play as they get older. You child learns from you first before peer influence. So, if you brink a lot and maybe smoke a lot too and you wouldn’t like your children to do the same as they grow older, then your best option might to reduce your drinking and smoking in their presence or stop it totally if possible.

This is just a few of the many priorities to be set as parents, some others many include getting involved in nearly all your kids activities both in school and at home, persistency in your way of life and your relationship with your spouse (if you are not a single parent) and much more. However, these few point will help ease your parenting stress and help you enjoy parenting even if you are a low income earner.
